Phlebotomy Training
Phlebotomy is a medical practice in which the practitioner draws blood from a person or animal by inserting a specific needle into a vein with care and caution, which will then be tested in a lab and of course, Phlebotomy training is required.
To become a Phlebotomist, you will need to do a specialized Phlebotomy training course. There are numerous educational centers that offer Phlebotomy training classes. These can last around one year. At the end of this, you take a Final/National Exam, after which, (providing you pass!) you will be fully qualified to practise as a Phlebotomist.
Once you master this art, not only will you be able to work pretty much anywere in the world, but you will be providing a less painful and scary phlebotmy experince to patients. There is nothing worse than having blood taken by someone who has not mastered this skill!
Giving blood or having blood taken by a Phlebotomist is a much safer and more secure procedure thanks to the advances in technology and training in the last decade or so. Because of this, there is great demand for qualified Phlebtomoy technicians in hospitals, doctors surgeries, independant laboratories and other health care facilities around the world.
Phlebotomists earn a decent wage for this skilled work, from $15 and up in the USA and job prospects are good despite the recent global downturn.
What to expect during Phlebotomy training:
- Correct blood drawing techniques to minimise pain and discomfort.
- Emphasis on patient care and attention.
- Correct handling and disposal of equipment.
- Safe handling of blood culture bottels and toxic or hazardous materials.
- Train under expert supervision both academically and while treating patients.
- Learn correct needle techniques and medical safety.
- How to generate patient reports.
Phlebotomy is considered a lucrative, necessary and respectable health care profession. A high school diploma or GED are required. You will be qualified after one year depending on where you take your Phlebotomy training and can then embark on a fulfilling, successful career helping people within the health care industry.
